Photobiomodulation (LED Light Therapy)

For dry eye, meibomian gland support, and skin longevity

In one sentence. We use medical-grade red and near-infrared LED light to support the energy systems inside your cells — calming eyelid inflammation, helping the oil glands that stabilize your tears, and encouraging healthier-looking skin. There is no peeling, no downtime, and no UV.

How the light works

Specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light are absorbed in the mitochondria — the part of the cell that makes energy. That photobiomodulation response can increase cellular energy (ATP), quiet inflammatory signaling, improve local circulation, and support tissue repair. In the eyelids, the same biology is why we use it for meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), the cause of most evaporative dry eye. On the face and neck, it supports collagen-producing cells and overall skin quality.

What we treat with this visit

  • Dry eye / MGD. Red and near-infrared light to the lids to support oil-gland function, reduce lid inflammation, and help stabilize the tear film. Often paired with lid hygiene, expression, IPL, or prescription care — not a replacement for them.
  • Skin quality and longevity. Red and near-infrared light for tone, fine lines, redness, and recovery. Blue light is reserved for breakout-prone skin when indicated.
  • Comfort and recovery. The same near-infrared programs used for tissue comfort can be directed to face, neck, or other areas when appropriate.

Your dry-eye treatment: lids exposed, eyes closed

This is different from IPL. With IPL we shield the eyes because the energy is high and broadband. With LED photobiomodulation, the oil glands in the eyelids are the target. We do not cover the lids.

  • Keep your eyes closed for the entire session. Do not look into the panel.
  • Eyelids stay uncovered so red and near-infrared light can reach the meibomian glands in the upper and lower lids.
  • We do not use IPL-style eye shields that bury the lids. If you cannot keep your eyes closed, we can use a small pupil-only cover that still leaves lid skin in the light field.
  • Makeup, mascara, and contact lenses off. Clean lid skin lets the light reach the tissue.

What a session feels like

You will recline comfortably. The Celluma Elite panel is positioned close to the face — usually about an inch away — and contoured to the treatment area. Most dry-eye and skin visits last 20 to 30 minutes. The light is bright; with eyes closed it is typically warm and relaxing, not painful. There is no gel and no recovery time. You may resume normal activity the same day. After a dry-eye session we may express the glands while the oils are more mobile.

What to expect

After 1–3 visits

Many patients notice calmer lids, less grittiness, or a fresher look to the skin. This is not guaranteed on visit one.

A series of visits

Results accumulate. A typical starting plan is several sessions over a few weeks, then maintenance based on your exam — not a single “reset.”

Honest limits

This device is FDA-cleared for listed aesthetic and pain indications. Dry-eye use is an evidence-informed adjunct in our protocol; it is not FDA-cleared specifically for dry eye and it does not replace IPL, thermal pulsation, or prescription therapy when those are needed.

Before and after your visit

  • Before. Arrive with a clean face if you can. Remove contacts. Tell us about photosensitizing medicines, pregnancy, active skin infection, or a history of light-triggered seizures.
  • During. Eyes closed. Relax. Breathe. Tell the staff if the brightness is uncomfortable.
  • After. Moisturizer and sunscreen as usual. Skip harsh acids or retinoids on treated skin the same evening if you are reactive. Continue your lid-hygiene plan.

Who this may not be for — today

We will review this with you. Light therapy is generally deferred or modified with photosensitizing drugs, over a known cancer in the treatment field, with certain photosensitive conditions, or when your physician advises against it. We never treat with the eyes open.

What Can TERA Evaluate?

Meibomian Gland Health

Specialized imaging allows us to visualize the oil-producing glands within your eyelids, helping identify structural changes and gland loss associated with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

Tear Film Stability

Non-invasive tear break-up time testing evaluates how quickly your tear film becomes unstable between blinks, providing valuable insight into tear quality.

Tear Volume

Tear meniscus measurements help assess the amount of tears present along your lower eyelid.

Lipid Layer Assessment

Advanced imaging evaluates the appearance and movement of the protective oil layer that helps prevent excessive tear evaporation.

Ocular Surface & Eyelid Health

High-resolution imaging helps identify visible redness, eyelid inflammation, and signs of blepharitis.

Corneal Analysis

Advanced corneal topography provides detailed information about the shape and surface of your cornea, supporting a more comprehensive eye evaluation.

Are You Experiencing These Symptoms?

Dry eye doesn’t always feel like dryness.

You may benefit from a comprehensive dry eye evaluation if you experience:

  • Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations
  • Excessive watering or tearing
  • Redness and irritation
  • Fluctuating or blurry vision
  • Eye fatigue or discomfort with screen use
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Symptoms that persist despite using artificial tears

You don’t have to keep guessing what’s causing your discomfort.
